Cyla was born to a large family in a small town on the Polish Ukrainian frontier. The daughter of a mill owner, she enjoyed the love of her parents Vave and Golda Gahr Tinne and seven siblings; brothers Yoilich, Benzion, Yankel and Simcha and sisters, Miriam, Perle, and Haikeh. Cyla was raised in a typical Jewish family of the time and place . Manievich, in 1939, had a Jewish community of 504. She was educated in the Polish schools and eventually was conversant in six languages. This part of her life came to an abrupt end in 1941 when the Holocaust arrived in Volhynia. Cyla escaped to Tashkent in Uzbekistan with one brother who eventually succumbed to tuberculosis. The rest of her family perished with the other Jews of Manievich. After the war, Cyla returned to Europe and found her way to the Fahrenwald Displaced Persons Camp in Germany. It was there that she met Avrum Sztundel, became his wife, and gave birth to her son Ksiel Wolf Sztundel in 1946. In June, 1949, Cyla, Avrum, and Ksiel arrived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Daughter, Golden was born the next month. Cyla created an atmosphere of loving warmth and generosity which extended beyond the confines of home and family. She was recognized in the Milwaukee Jewish Community as a pillar of generosity, extending her caring and nurturing and unparalleled Jewish cuisine to friends and strangers alike. Her home was always open to her friends, members of her congregation, traveling scholars, rabbis, and refugees. In her later years, Cyla came to live near her children in the Bay Area and resided in San Francisco until her death. She is survived by her son Ksiel of Oakland, California, daughter Golden Lerman and son-in-law Edward Lerman, of Napa, grandchildren Samara Lerman of Seattle, Washington, and Ben Lerman of Napa, and cousin Jack Melamedik of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
